Asbestos grass (Pennisetum basedowii) is an annual or short-lived perennial which occurs across northern Australia on floodplains and in Mitchell grass (Astrebla spp) pastures. It is most abundant inthe Gulf country of north Queensland (it is also known locally as `bastard grass').
