To Promote and Strengthen Agriculture in Nevada by providing Financial Assistance to Deserving Groups or Individuals Involved in Research or Education." The Foundation seeks ways to encourage, develop, enhance and sustain a productive agricultural industry. We believe in fostering education and research to benefit both the agricultural producers and leaders of today as well as those of the generations to follow. This is accomplished by generating revenues to fund our two main areas of involvement: The funding of pertinent, quality research to help educate our current producers as well as the public; and the granting of education assistance awards to deserving individuals who are seeking future careers relating to agriculture, including careers in biotechnologies and animal health. Agriculture in Nevada: In Nevada as across the nation: · Farmland is decreasing · Number of farms is declining · Average age of farmers is rising · Young people are not going into farming · Agriculture is a competitive business Although the U.S. Department of Labor asserts that one in ten persons employed in the nation is involved with food or food preparation, less than three percent of the population are actual producers. These farmers, growers and ranchers face continuing and new challenges to maintain profitability in a worldwide competitive environment, yet continue to improve their crops and yields by utilizing new technologies, with added benefits to the economy and environment. Farmers and ranchers in Nevada face these and other challenges. Agricultural lands and public rangeland grazing allotments that have been in continuous agricultural use since the latter 1800's are now faced with competing land and water uses and urbanization. The Foundation believes that agriculture and agricultural careers within the state can and will continue to remain profitable and desirable as new and innovative methods are tested and employed, and issues are resolved. The Foundation believes that agriculture is a necessary industry and provides benefits to the entire economy, and can provide added public benefits to the watersheds, open spaces, conservation of wildlife, wildfire prevention and public and private recreation.
