Somewhere in the past one of our ancestors picked up a flaming brand, held it and eventuallyset the grass on fire for his purpose. He had long recognized the fact that animals congregated on such burns, for he was a hunter and gatherer. This was the beginning of mankind, not when he made tools. No otehr creature  will hold a flaming brand but man.This early knowledge of the art of burning is used today by the herdsmen and sheperds of many tribes all over the world. We have seen livestock moved from one burn to the next in many parts of southern and east Africa... This article looks at the use of burning on rangelands.
