Paying landholders to produce ecosystem services—including water quality improvements, nature conservation and restoration, landscape management and carbon sequestration—is not a new concept. A generic term for such transactions is ‘payments for ecosystem services’ (PES), but they are also referred to as stewardship payments (Australia), green payments (USA), or agri-environmental schemes (Europe).
