The National Land and Water Resources Audit was initiated in order to assess the state of Australia's living natural resources, to better inform decision -makers, and to underpin further investment programmes to address the degradation of the country's living natural resources that has occurred since European settlement. For the rangelands, it was felt that an assessment was not feasible, and effort was focussed on developing an auditing framework.
