Body

The 100th anniversary of the Smith Lever Act provides an excellent backdrop to a review of the history and current status of Extension in Indian Country. On the whole, American Indian tribes are still significantly underserved in funding and staffing for Extension programs. Significant institutional challenges exist, both in the USDA funding mechanisms and in the oversight and support of programs amongst tribes, state and tribal colleges, and other partners. New opportunities will include expanded partnerships with shared programmatic objectives that leverage the community trust provided by reservation-based Extension offices.
