The loss of biodiversity, one of the major environmental problems of our times, is currently attracting worldwide interest. Examples are the World Conference on Biodiversity in Nagoya 2010 and Hyderabad 2012, as well as the “International Year of Biodiversity 2010.†The establishment of an international scientific council on biodiversity issues, the “Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services IPBES†shows that the issue has been taken up worldwide by politicians and the public.
