Pasture Science at South African Universities owes its origin to early realization of the vital role of vegetation management in soil conservation programs. Being a study of the principles and practice of grazing land maintenance and utilization, Pasture Science must be based on plant ecology and physiology, which together give an explanation of the botanical phenomena of importance in such a study. It also requires those facets of applied science and husbandry practice which enable this knowledge to be applied in such a way that increased pastoral production may be maintained.
