The objects of various types of rests which may be applied to grassveld are analysed and an attempt is made to define the different types of rests which are at present in use. These are categorized into six major groups: seeding rests ? as defined ;seedling establishment rests ? as defined ;tillering rests ? to encourage lateral tiller development;herbage accumulation rests ? for the accumulation of herbage for foggage, hay or far burning for the control of encroaching bush;vigour rests ? for the establishment of pre?defoliation reserve levels (recovery rests), for the accumulation of reserves for anticipated periods of stress (reserve accumulation rests) and for the promotion of a large assimilatory system to ensure rapid current growth rates (forage production rests); andperiod of absence ? short term withdrawal of little direct benefit to the veld.
