The Pasture Scientist, is primarily concerned with maximizing the productivity of pastoral lands. In conducting his research and expressing the results of his work he has not always appreciated that in order to have most meaning to agricultural industry his levels of productivity should be expressed in terms of the economic limitations to productivity. These vary in different ecological regions and economic structures. The process of pasture intensification refers to the application of practices designed to increase productivity. There are two facets to pasture intensification ? pasture type intensification and pasture management intensification, each consisting of five steps. Very often differences in pasture practices between, different areas and continents merely reflect differences in the stages of intensification reached due to differences in either the climatic or economic environment. In considering embarking on an intensification programma the Pasture Scientist and farmer should be aware of the alternative steps of intensification and should weigh these up in terms of both environment and economics.
