The short?term effects of veld fertilization, which are seldom measured, are important in an understanding of the botanical changes that take place and may determine the profitability of the enterprise. In this, the first of a series of two articles, the effects of veld fertilization and stocking rate on the vegetation of the Bankenveld are discussed. Both nitrogen fertilization and stocking rate influenced the species composition of the sward during the first three years. Applications of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer increased herbage yields during the third year of the experiment, but stocking rates did not significantly influence herbage production.
