Body

A small plot trial with different heights of defoliation of unpalatable and other plant species at three levels of fertilization was conducted over a three year period in Cymbopogon?Themeda veld. It is concluded that this type of trial is a satisfactory means of evaluating or simulating a variety of grazing practices with little labour and small cost on uniform areas of veld. Further, it was apparent that the height of defoliation practised influenced the reaction of certain grass species to fertilization. Lax utilisation of the veld had a more favourable effect on the basal cover of the sward under consideration than did severe utilisation.
