Summary Grasses are one of the great successes of evolution. They occur in nearly every habitat from impoverished Antarctic wastes to the lush tropics and are dominant over vast stretches of landscape (Woodward et al., 2004). The importance of grasslands in every sense–biological, economic, cul- tural, and aesthetic–has been repeatedly celebrated (e.g., Bryant, 1832).
