The geology, climates past and present, and soils of Africa are summarized, as are the effects of fire on the vegetation. The vegetation and animals of each major zone – forest, tropical seasonal vegetation (woodland, shrubland, grassland, bushland), and desert are outlined, as are those of azonal regions including montane and afroalpine, wetlands, lakes, and coasts. The ecosystems of Madagascar are also briefly described. Some possible future scenarios for African ecosystems are discussed.
