Body

Although cattle are what most people think of first when they think of the western ranching industry, sheep were grazed in Southern Arizona from the time of Father Kino. Large herds of sheep were run in the Santa Cruz Valley and over the pass into the Altar Valley. The Arizona Star newspaper reported that there were over 78,000 sheep in Pima County in 1879. This installment of Arivaca Yesterdays focuses in on the role sheep played in shaping Southern Arizona in the 1800s and 1900s and the impact sheep can have on the environment.
