Phylena Wallace Tonge was born in 1827 in Pennsylvania. She trained to become a teacher and joined a wagon train heading to California in 1848 as a teacher for a family with young children. Soon after arriving in Tucson which still a part of Mexico at the time, she taught herself spanish. Continuing onto California, Phylena married William H. Tonge and after many years of traveling, settled in the Arivaca area in 1866.
