The Arizona Small Mine Operators Association (ASMOA) was created to support the mining industry within the state. Founded in 1938 by Charles F. Willis, a professor of mining and engineering at the University of Arizona, the association quickly expanded. Within a year, the Arivaca Council was established and became of one of the largest local chapters in the state. It's duties included the dissemination of mining information, but the ASMOA gradually took on the role of a community social organization, planning BBQ fundraisers and other social events. The ASMOA is still in operation today.
