Body
The National Park Service is using sagebrush, an iconic species of the American West, as an indicator of the health of western ecosystems. The more we understand complexity of ecosystems like sagebrush steppe habitat the better we'll understand their significance for all of the plants, animals and humans that depend upon them. Monitoring "vital signs" like sagebrush help park scientists to manage these fragile environments and preserve them unimpaired for this and future generations.
