Changes in lizard abundance on protected versus grazed desert scrub in Baja California Sur, Mexico

Body

Within the ungrazed livestock exclosure, grass cover, herb cover and average height were higher compared to outside the exclosure. Outside the exclosure, fallen tree trunks and exposed soil were higher. Some of the invertebrate species that lizards forage on were negatively impacted by the loss in perennial grass due to grazing. The lizard species Urosaurus nigricaudus was adversely impacted by grazing, while Uta stansburiana seemed to be positively affected by grazing. Cnemidophorus hyperythrus exhibited no apparent effect from livestock grazing.
