Effects of continuous grazing on habitat and density of ground-foraging birds in south Texas

The prominent finding of this study was the high level of interaction effects between grazing pressure and soil type. Ground cover and plants used for forage responded to grazing pressure depending on the soil type they grew in. Eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna) densities were higher on clay soils and under moderate grazing pressure. Mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) densities were higher on sandy loam soils and under heavy grazing pressure. Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) densities were the same on both sandy loam and clay soils as well as under moderate and heavy grazing pressure.
