Variation in grasshopper (Acrididae) densities in response to fire frequency and bison in tallgrass prairie

Body
Grasshopper densities showed a strong positive increase with the presence of bison grazing and also to prescribed burning. In contrast, overall grasshopper numbers decreased in areas that were ungrazed and unburned. Joern pointed out that results were nearly the opposite in shortgrass prairies where vegetation density is much less. He also insisted that natural disturbances, such as fire and grazing, play an important role in the heterogeneity of grasslands, which is beneficial for many species, including grasshoppers.
