Kreuper et al, found that the removal of cattle from the San Pedro River NCA had a positive effect on the herbaceous vegetation in the riparian and mesquite areas. They found that cattle removal had no effect on herbaceous vegetation in the desert scrub community, as well as no effect on trees and shrubs in any of the three habitat types. Forty-six percent of bird species saw an increase, 25% remained the same, and 29% decreased in numbers with the removal of cattle from the study area. Kreuper et al. felt that the removal of cattle from riparian areas was essential in maintaining the biodiversity of the area, however actual results showed complete removal may not be necessary.
