Prairie falcon (Falco mexicanus) populations, in the study area, greatly declined from 1976 to 1997. Droughts, declines in Townsend's ground squirrel (Spermophilus townsendii) populations, fires, and agriculture all contributed to the decline in prairie falcons. Idaho Army National Guard artillery firing and tank maneuvers near the Orchard Training Area were also a major factor. Poor prairie falcon foraging opportunities were likely created by a combination of military training, fire, and livestock grazing.
