Body

This short project report highlights the efforts of the Zuni Fish and Wildlife Department in developing and implementing a comprehensive program of wetland and riparian restoration. An important and innovative component of this program is the use of beaver (Castor canadensis) to restore riparian habitat. With the reduction of beavers from the late 18th century through the early 20th centuries, an important component in the riparian ecosystem was lost and riparian ecosystems began to degrade. An important component of this comprehensive program includes the reintroduction of beavers beginning in early spring 1985-1999.
