Body

A rainfall simulation study was conducted adjacent to Sheep Creek in the Roosevelt National Forest, 80 km northwest of Ft. Collins, Colorado. A rotating boom rainfall simulator was used to evaluate the effect of three vegetative treatments (unclipped-control, clipped to 10 cm-moderately clipped, and clipped to soil surface-heavily clipped) on the ability of two montane riparian communities (Poa pratensis/Deschampsia caespitosa and Carex rostrata/Carex aquatilus) to work as filters to remove NO₃⁻-N, NH₄⁺-N, and PO₄⁻³-P from sediment laden overland flow water. Rainfall simulation consisted of a dry run (no added sediment), a rest period, followed by a wet run (sediment added). A total of five water samples were collected during each run.
