Body

How Carex density is affected by lesser snow geese grazing was measured in salt and freshwater marshes along La Pérouse Bay in Manitoba, Canada (58° 04' N, 94° 03' W). Carex shoots were counted in paired plots which were either grazed or ungrazed. Ungrazed plots were covered with wire mesh either in 1985 or early 1986. Shoot densities were counted in June of 1986, 1989, and 1995. June was chosen because these marshes were used while geese constructed nests and incubated their eggs in April and May. In addition, sedges begin to produce leaves in June.
