Body

California'srangelands are a globalbiological diversity hotspot, and provide highforage production and other ecosystem service values. However, over 200,000 hectares ofgrasslands and oak woodlandshave beenconvertedsince the 1980'sdue toheavy demand for irrigated agricultural crops, housing, and associated infrastructureto supportthe state'sbooming population. Land values continue to spike statewide, exacerbating the pressure on manylandowners to sell or convert their lands, and stretchingpublic and private conservation dollarsever thinner.Warmer temperatures andhighly variable rainfall,a complex regulatory environment, aging ranch infrastructure, and invasive speciesare also amplifyingthe challengesranchers and rangelandmanagersare facing. We will explore these threats in maps and stories, and propose a variety of solutions and strategies to conserve California's Mediterranean grasslands and oak woodlands.
