This original illustration was created for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists with the Global Alliance for Rangelands & Pastoralists. The image brings together many types of rangelands into a single composite. These places are ecologically, economically, culturally, and socially vital, yet they are increasingly under threat.

The illustration includes 27 species of flora and fauna from across North America. The composition honors the diversity of these ecosystems while assembling many regions together to celebrate this incredible North American biome as a whole.

This illustration is supported by a related entry in this collection, an Illustration Interpretation card. This illustration can be downloaded as an image alone with no text for use in IYRP exhibits or other educational programs. The illustration interpretation card can be downloaded and used for educational purposes where identification of the individual species is needed. Each species is numbered, identified a described through a brief natural history entry.
