Body

These are photos from a fire on Haleakala Ranch in July 2024. The fire was started by a downed power line in the Puu Pahu Reserve. This area was taken out of grazing around 2015 and was fenced to protect the native shrublands. You can see the benefits of managed grazing as the fire stopped at the boundary of the Reserve and the managed grazing pastures of the Ranch. Conservationist have been clamoring to plant natives after the massive wild fires in Lahaina, Olinda, Kula and Pulehu in August 8 of 2023. As these pictures illustrate, unmanaged native plants are highly flammable and it takes managed lands to slow wild fires. An option is deploying smart grazing to reduce fuel loads and support native habitat while providing economic opportunity for folks.
