Portuguese cowbell
Body
A traditional Portuguese bell being rung by my daughter on the Historical Way on the southwest coast of Portugal in the Alentajo region. These bells have been made in this area for hundreds if not thousands of years. There are fewer and fewer bell makers, but Alentejo has historically been an active center of production of this folk craft. Some of these bells are called chocalhos. The hand-forged bells are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage.
