The Brazilian Society of Animal Science is a nonprofit scientific Association. It was founded on July 26, 1951, and is known by the acronym SBZ. It is headquartered in the city of Brasilia, DF, and currently has over 3,000 members in Brazil and abroad. Its staff is composed of the finest and most highly-acclaimed professionals in Brazil working in the area of Animal Science, in several different fields of expertise. These professionals work in universities and other research institutions. The society has a scientific Journal entitled "Brazilian Journal of Animal Science," in publication since 1973, and headquartered in Animal Science Department at the Viçosa Federal University. Every year, SBZ holds an Annual Meeting where advances in different Animal Science fields in Brazil and abroad are discussed. It is a participant of the Thematic Chamber of Agrarian Sciences at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, as well as other national forums involved in policy-making for the livestock sector in Brazil. The society is administered by the Board of Directors, consisting of the President, 1st Vice-President, 2nd Vice-President, 3rd Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and the Executive Secretary. In each state of the country there is a state-level board of directors responsible for coordinating SBZ activities. They are also responsible for the liaison between the SBZ Board of Directors and its members on a state level.
