A range of grazing and non?grazing defoliation treatments were appiied to Dohne Sourveld in order to record their effect on the presence and vigour of Elionurus muticus. Frequent heavy utilisation reduced the vigour but not the presence of E. muticus. This treatment, however, also reduced the vigour of the other species in the sward. Controlled grazing of palatable species maintained the vigour of the veld without affecting the incidence of E. muticus. Sound veld management should thus be aimed at optimum utilisation of the palatable species in the sward.
