In this installment of Arivaca Yesterdays Mary Kasulaitis tell us the story of Joaquin Murrieta, a Mexican bandit that went to work in the Californian gold fields in 1848. By 1853 he had joined with other bandits and was known as a vicious, vengeful man. His story was later transformed into a Robin Hood-like tale by the sensationalist novelist of the era.
