In the West much of the developable land for homes is in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) where risk of fire impacts is much greater. The following practices would improve life safety for fire fighters and residents and limit the loss of homes: thoughtful land use planning, careful selection of exterior home construction materials, strategic landscaping in subdivisions and mitigation of existing wildfire hazard fuels in and around the built environment. This short talk will address these practices and illustrate how future WUI dwellers can give their home a greater chance of surviving a wildfire and at the same time make it safer for firefighters to protect their property.
