Prairie grouse (Tympanuchus spp. and Centrocercus spp.) as a group have provided subsistence and ceremony to native cultures and supplemental foods fo early pioneers travelling across the vast prairies and grasslands of western North America. As the prairies were transformed into lands of agricultural production and other uses much of these native landscapes were lost, and prairie grouse populations with them.
