Mass migration of Yellowstone's ungulates is, not only a critical step to enhance their nutritional quality, but also a key factor in the nutrient cycle of the Park's grass and shrublands. Migration allows previously grazed areas time to recover when resources are sufficient to support growth. Frank determined that the ungulates found in Yellowstone are patch grazers, who's grazing intensity increases as the patch production increases. Ungulates have a large influence nature's nitrogen flow, mainly through their trampling and waste products.
