The effects of vertebrate herbivory on plant community structure in the coastal marshes of the Pearl River, Louisiana, USA

Taylor and Grace investigate the impacts of nutria (Myocastor coypus) herbivory in three different marsh communities. Herbivory reduced biomass equally in all three communities, a reduction of about 30% compared with ungrazed areas. Panicum virgatum and Aster subulatus were reduced in the freshwater community, and no species were significantly reduced in the other two communities. Panicum virgatum and Vigna luteola were increased by herbivory in the oligohaline community, but no species were significantly increased in the other communities. Herbivory did not affect species richness in any community.
