Body

The differences in yearling Hereford heifer weight gain and beef production under light and moderate stocking rates were examined approximately 60 km northeast of Fort Collins, Colorado (40 49 N; 107 47 W) on rangeland dominated by fourwing saltbush from 1996 to 1999. Grazing occurred in early spring (April to mid-May) and again in late fall on 16 ha experimental pastures. All vegetation within the experimental pasture was catalogued and annual precipitation was recorded. Stocking rates were randomly allocated across the seasonal grazing periods with early spring and late fall grazing using five yearling Hereford heifers for light grazing and eight for medium grazing. Animal gains and beef production were determined at the beginning and the end of each seasonal grazing period.
